Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
Practical Questions
Fees and Arrangements
My fees are set at a sliding scale and start at £95 for weekly sessions. My standard fee is £110 for individuals and £130 for couples.
I will offer you an initial telephone call, free of charge, to discuss your current situation and the ways therapy may be able to help.
Normally I will suggest that you come for an initial consultation which will allow us both to make an assessment of whether ongoing sessions are right for you. Once we decide to work together, I ask you to commit to attending sessions at the agreed duration, at least once a week.
Cancellations
Although I do charge for missed sessions where less than 48 hours notice has been given, if you cannot attend I will try to offer an alternative time to meet.

Why psychotherapy?
People choose to begin psychotherapy for a wide range of reasons. You may be facing an unforeseen crisis, a sudden change which you cannot cope with, a bereavement or significant loss which feels overwhelming, or feel trapped in recurring family dynamics. Alternatively you may feel unfulfilled in the field of love, sexuality, or relationships, find yourself questioning the meaning of your life, or feel unable to make an important choice.

Regardless of the specific reason, I will support you in your wish to understand what is causing your suffering and to live your life more creatively than before.

What is psychoanalysis?
Psychoanalysis focuses on the unconscious. It encourages exploration of behavioural patterns, thoughts, family dynamics, relationships, memories, fantasies, dreams, and significant life events, with the aim of uncovering insights into how a person has arrived where they are. The solution to your struggles will not be found until you have grasped something new about their complex cause and meaning.
This approach offers a space to engage with complex and often conflictual emotions and thoughts which you may never have spoken out loud. You may find that elements of your family history resurface which you haven’t thought about for quite some time. Rather than offering, you advice, psychoanalysis provides an opportunity to understand the causes of one's distress through hearing them in a new way and ultimately to discover your own solutions.

What is the frequency of sessions?
Depending on the needs and desires of each individual, session can be once or twice a week. The length of the session is variable; it can last up to 50 minutes.

How long does psychotherapy last?
The length of our work together will depend on what you are struggling with and the frequency of sessions. Although some people feel something shift after only a few sessions, the treatment takes time and change happens incrementally. On the other hand, long-term work may not be suitable to your circumstances. The therapeutic effects will strongly depend on your capacity and desire to invest in the work.

What do I say when I come to sessions?
In the initial consultation and first few sessions I will encourage you to speak freely about whatever comes to your mind: thoughts, ideas, images, dreams, fragments of memories, fantasies, what happened today or something that you’d rather not say. I will ask a series of questions to have a wider understanding of the issues you are bringing and what you are hoping to gain from therapy.
